and the other two gentlemen that did the pre work were more than professional, and very kind in every way, and helpful in every way and kept me informed of what was going on each step of the way
For starters, what I learned is that the best paints available today—such as high-quality options like Sherwin-Williams Duration or Emerald—can still perform very well, typically lasting around 7–10 years in Arizona conditions.
Modern paints today are:
• More flexible
• Better at resisting cracking
• Improved UV resistance compared to lower-grade paints often found at big box stores
So, it’s not that all paint is worse today—it’s that quality matters more than ever, especially in Arizona’s extreme sun.
Rhino Shield, however, is not a traditional paint. It’s more of a ceramic coating that is:
• Applied much thicker than standard paint
• Designed to reflect UV exposure
• Built to handle expansion and contraction, especially on stucco homes
Why do people choose it in Arizona?
• It claims a longer lifespan (20–25 years vs. ~7–10 for traditional paint)
• Better resistance to fading and cracking
• Performs well under extreme heat and sun exposure
Reality check:
• It can last longer, but proper prep work and installer quality are critical. Rhino Shield includes prep work and uses a special primer that etches into the existing surface—something many traditional painters either skip or charge extra for, and it matters more than people realize.
• It is significantly more expensive upfront (roughly 2–3x the cost of standard paint)
• Nothing is perfect—especially in Arizona’s heat and sun—so some homeowners dol report fading over time, just at a slower rate
One important thing to understand is that repairs are typically not included with any painter’s estimate. This can include stucco repair, woodwork, sealing around windows, and similar items. These can be negotiated (often at a reasonable cost) with the Rhino Shield contractor, but costs can add up quickly. My advice: don’t cut corners here. Since the coating is only as good as the surface underneath, it makes sense to address everything properly upfront—especially if you expect to benefit from the long-term warranty.
From the start, we had a no-cost in-home estimate with Richard B. from Rhino Shield, who was very thorough. He walked through the process at a comfortable pace, allowed plenty of time for questions and answers, and brought sample materials to demonstrate the ceramic coating. The full process—especially the prep work—was explained clearly, which helped tie everything back to how the warranty is supported. There was no high-pressure sales approach; he let the product speak for itself. I came away understanding much more than expected, especially what I was paying for beyond just the brand name.
As for the contractor working with Rhino Shield, this part is important. I’ve worked with contractors before, and I can say that Ulysses Trujillo (Custom Painting/Repairs) and his crew stood out. They listened, made helpful suggestions, were ready and willing to provide repairs, and kept me informed throughout the process. I received regular updates, including texts and photos showing progress, which made a big difference.
If any issues came up, they addressed them right away. Communication was open, honest, and respectful—exactly how it should be. Their advice was solid and on point, which made the overall experience much smoother than past projects I’ve had with other contractors.
Would I recommend Rhino Shield? Not because of the price—but because you get what you pay for. The warranty is a big plus, and the fact that it’s transferable when you sell your home adds real value.
Overall, I’m very happy I went with Rhino Shield. The house looks better than I expected, and even the neighbors have noticed and commented on the results.
